Jim Hayter at the Fred Gibb Memorial 2006

This is a link to an article about Jim Hayter and how he got to the world Nationals Race to take home the win driving the 1969 ZL1 Camaro
Also some history on him. He was interviewed for this story in LaHarpe Illinois and was on hand at the event to autograph memorabillia.

Some interesting information~

Hayter, born in 1941 in Cushing, Oklahoma, was 16 when he became interested in cars. His 20 year old brother had a fancy 1955 Chevrolet.
His first car was a black 1927 Model A, he painted red, built, showed, and drove for pleasure. He went from that to a 1950 Ford with an Oldsmobile V8 engine in it and he painted it blue and street raced at age 17. He learned from his brother, at home. He bought a 1958 Chevrolet BelAir Convertible loaded up with a Corvette 270 HP engine. He graduated from high school and went to the drag strip with no seat belt, no helmets, and no concern about safety, he said, and he won quite a bit.

Pro Stock World Championship - Jim Hayter

At Jim Hayter's direction, a lot of weight was removed from the ZL-1 1969 Camaro,
a Rally Sport grill installed so the headlight assemblies could legally be removed and a "Grump lump" style hood scoop was added.
At the A.H.R.A. World Points Finals in Fremont, California October 8, 1971, the car set a record of 9.63 seconds at 143 mph and won the Pro Stock World Championship with Jim Hayter driving!
